The many lovely flowers attract bees & butterflies, and over 100 species of birds use these Blue Gums. Squirrels and other small animals enjoy eating the seeds as well. They can tolerate salty coastal conditions, any type of soil, and dryness. As the name suggests, this tree is an Australian (Tasmanian) native. they were introduced to the USA in 1853 where they were grown for fuel (lumber). They also make such a good windbreak that thousands of miles of California coast were lined with these trees.

The Tasmanian eucalyptus seeds have sprouted 2 out of 15 in the last 10 days. I would say that I need longer to see if the other seeds are still viable but I also started 2 other kinds of eucalyptus from other sellers a few days after starting these, and significantly more have germinated with the ones started after these. I don’t expect any more to germinate of these and that’s not a great percentage. I’ll update if several more pop up though.
