OTHER: The European Plum is a large shrub to small tree that is native to Europe & west Asia. They are valuable both for their delicious edible fruit & as a lovely ornamental. This species of plum is beloved by home gardeners & is grown commercially on a large scale.
Plums were one of the first fruits to be domesticated by humans , & have been cultivated for thousands of years. This species is the most commonly grown variety of plum. Most prunes (dried plums) are made from fruits of this species . Today, California is the largest producer of prunes in the world . This ancient species is self-fertile unlike some hybrids, providing a great advantage especially when space is limited.
The European Plum has a medium growth rate, gaining about 2’ of height each year. They are able to grow well in part shade, but produce more fruit in a sunny location. This plum tree is not picky about soil type, & can deal with soil that is light & sandy to heavy clays.
In spring, the plum tree blooms in lovely fragrant white flowers that will attract bees & butterflies to pollinate them. ‘These flowers can be eaten. They are used as a garnish for salads and ice cream, or brewed into a tea. ’
The fruit starts out green, & by fall matures into 3” purple plums that are round to oval in shape. The European Plum has a high sugar content, so is sweeter than many other varieties. Plums are low calorie, no/low fat, have only 8 carbs, & contain vitamins. Enjoy the sweet, juicy fruit raw, cooked, canned, or dried (dried plums are prunes). Plums are more versatile than many people realize, & have a wide variety of culinary uses. They can be juiced, turned into delicious smoothies or jams, made into desserts like pies & tarts, sauces for meats, & more.
A deciduous plant, their leaves turn lovely shades of yellow to red in the crisp fall air.
Be sure to leave a few plums on the tree for the birds & critters to enjoy :)
